When a Cummins DPF Needs Cleaning

Watch for the Maintenance Lamp

Newer Cummins engines track ash buildup for you. According to Cummins, X15 engines include an ash load monitor, and when cleaning is due, the check engine lamp or amber warning lamp flashes for 30 seconds after the key is turned on. The DPF maintenance fault is fault code 5383.

Typical Ash Maintenance Intervals

Cummins sets ash maintenance intervals by duty cycle. For example, Cummins lists these intervals for the 2024 X15:

Duty cycle Fuel mileage DPF ash maintenance
Severe Under 5.5 mpg 250,000–400,000 miles
Normal 5.5–6.5 mpg 400,000–600,000 miles
Light Over 6.5 mpg 600,000–800,000 miles

Smaller engines are often due sooner. Cummins lists DPF cleaning for the 2024 L9 at 200,000 miles or 6,500 hours. Check your engine's maintenance guide for its exact interval.

Other Warning Signs

A Cummins DPF can also show it's loaded before the interval: frequent regens, regens that don't finish, lost power, lower fuel mileage or restriction codes. See signs your DPF needs cleaning.

Our Cleaning Process

Our process is Cummins-approved because we follow the Clean Diesel Specialists 8-step procedure on Cummins-approved aqueous cleaning equipment from EnviroMotive. The steps:

  1. Initial inspection: We check the filter for external damage, contamination and wear.
  2. Record and document: We record the filter's airflow, weight and condition as a baseline.
  3. Blast cleaning: Compressed air knocks loose the larger soot and ash particles.
  4. Aqueous cleaning: A high-pressure water flush reaches deep into the filter to remove fine particles that air alone can miss.
  5. Drying: All moisture is removed before heat treatment.
  6. Thermal regeneration: The filter is heat-treated at controlled temperatures to burn off any remaining fine particulates.
  7. Cooling and final check: After cooling, we run a final airflow test and structural check.
  8. Package and document: The filter is sealed, labeled and returned with documentation of the cleaning results.

After the Cleaning

We clean filters only and don't remove or install them, so your mechanic or repair shop handles both. When the cleaned filter goes back on:

  • Use new gaskets and clamps. They aren't included with cleaning, but we sell them.
  • Have the DPF ash and soot load values reset with a Cummins-compatible service tool, so the engine knows the filter is clean.
  • Fix any problem that was loading the filter early, like injector, turbo or EGR issues or high oil consumption.
